Player & Parent Information Advisory
An informational disclaimer written for aspiring players and parents/guardians of young aspiring players.
Purpose
This document provides parents, guardians, and players with a clear explanation of the types of fantasy themes that may appear in our Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) sessions, as well as the safety measures and content‑adjustment techniques used to ensure an enjoyable and age‑appropriate experience for all participants. This advisory is for informational purposes only.
1. Nature of the Program
Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a cooperative, narrative‑driven tabletop game set in fictional fantasy environments. Players work together to solve problems, overcome challenges, and engage with imaginative storylines created and facilitated by the Game Master (GM). These sessions often include elements common to fantasy literature, mythology, and adventure fiction. Players sit together around a table with their Game Master, and while the Gmae Master describes what is happening in a fictional world, the players describe what their heroic characters would do in response to attempt to solve the imaginary plot.
All content is strictly fictional, and presented in a controlled, guided, and age‑appropriate manner. No literal monsters, villains, or magic is being employed, save for the magic of the human imagination. “Creatures”, “monsters”, “spirits”, or “humanoids” as described in this document refer only to the descriptions and imitations of fictional beings, and are not literal or physical in any way.
2. Potential Themes That May Appear in Gameplay
While content is adapted to suit the developmental level of each group, the following thematic elements may appear:
2.1 Fantasy Conflict
Players may encounter mythical creatures, magical obstacles, or puzzle‑based challenges.
For adult groups, this may include hostile creatures, spirits, or antagonistic humanoid characters.
For younger players, hostile humanoid characters are not included, and all creatures—regardless of appearance—can be pacified or overcome through non‑violent solutions if the players choose.
2.2 Mild Peril and Dramatic Adventure
Scenarios may involve exploration, discovering secrets, navigating fictional dangers, or solving mysteries. These scenes are designed to be suspenseful without being frightening or overwhelming.
2.3 Magic and Supernatural Elements
Stories may contain spellcasting, enchanted objects, or mythical beings, consistent with established fantasy storytelling traditions.
2.4 Ethical and Strategic Decision‑Making
Players may be asked to choose between various courses of action for their characters. These scenarios emphasize teamwork, cooperation, problem‑solving, and imaginative thinking.
3. Content Modification and Safety Measures
The Red Lion Adventuring Company employs several structured safety tools and adaptation methods to ensure the wellbeing and comfort of all participants.
3.1 The “X” System (Immediate Content Removal Procedure)
Player comfort is the highest priority at any game session. At any time during a session if a player becomes uncomfortable with a particular narrative element or theme, they may signal this by forming an “X” with their hands or indicating an “X” on paper.
No explanation is required.
The flagged content will be immediately altered, removed, or redirected.
Once removed, the theme will not reappear for the remainder of the session.
This policy applies to all player groups, regardless of age.
3.2 Age‑Appropriate Descriptions and Language
The GM adjusts narrative descriptions and dialogue based on both:
The stated age range of the session, and
The observed comfort level of the group during play.
Adjustments include (but are not limited to):
Toning down potentially intense descriptions (e.g., conflict, spooky atmosphere).
Removing frightening, gruesome, or highly dramatic elements for younger groups.
Eliminating vulgar or inappropriate language from non‑player characters.
Keeping tone and vocabulary accessible for the developmental stage of the group.
3.3 Variation in Threat Level by Age Group
The nature of challenges the players face differs significantly based on age:
Adult Groups may encounter:
Hostile monsters
Disgruntled spirits
Dangerous magical anomalies
Antagonistic humanoids (handled in a fantasy‑appropriate way)
Teen Groups may encounter:
Non‑graphic fantasy conflict
Creatures or obstacles that can be overcome through strategy or diplomacy
Reduced intensity in descriptions of danger
Children’s Groups (e.g., Kids D&D Day) will encounter:
Only non‑humanoid or clearly fantastical creatures
Scenarios where all threats can be resolved peacefully
Optional non‑violent solutions such as reasoning, games, negotiations, or friendship‑based resolutions
No depictions of explicit violence, gore, frightening horror themes, or complex moral dilemmas
These measures ensure the content remains uplifting, imaginative, and safe for younger players.
4. Player Wellbeing and Support
Player comfort, enjoyment, and emotional safety are the top priorities of each session. Adjustments will be made immediately upon request. Players are encouraged to communicate preferences or concerns at any time.
Parents/guardians may also communicate any sensitivities, fears, or content restrictions prior to the session, and the GM will tailor content accordingly.
